Why ocean physics Education is important?
Energy moving across the deep oceanic waters surrounding Puerto Rico continuously arrives to our shores. Here on the islands, surfers regularly enjoy northwest swells that are generated in the North Atlantic, by distant winter storms. Storm tides and powerful waves during hurricanes play havoc on coastal infrastructure and are feared by the owners of beachfront properties. The rhythm of the tide is thoroughly followed by fishermen. Ocean currents carry pollutants off the coast discharged by wastewater treatment plants. Rising sea level is a concern of the general population. All oceanic phenomena mentioned above are linked to human activities. A comprehensive knowledge of ocean physical phenomena can play a fundamental role in the process of decision making in coastal communities, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, government and individuals themselves. This knowledge is far from complete one, recent findings reveal new routes between physical processes in the deep ocean and us. This website is a starting point to get this knowledge.
Below we show the Calendar of Oceanic Physical Phenomena observed in the oceanic and coastal waters of PR.
